Algunas Declaraciones sobre el Nuevo Artista Americano como Hombre
A Few Statements on the New American Artist as a Man

Like the new poet, the new filmmaker is not interested in public acceptance. The new artist knows that most of what’s publicly said today, is corrupt and distorted. He knows that the truth is somewhere else, not in the NY Times not in the Pravda. He feels that he must do something about it, for his own conscience, that he must rebel against the tightening web of lies.

Some writers from home and abroad have accused the new artist of nihilism and anarchy. The American artist could sing happily and carelessly, with no despair in his voice—but then he would reflect neither his society nor himself, he would be a liar like everybody else. With man’s soul being squeezed out in all the four corners of the world today, when governments are encroaching upon his personal being with the huge machinery of bureaucracy, war and mass communications, he feels that the only way to preserve man is to encourage his sense of rebellion, his sense of disobedience, even at the cost of open anarchy and nihilism. The entire landscape of human thought, as it is accepted publicly in the Western world, has to be turned over. All public ideologies, values, and ways of life must be doubted, attacked. “Smell it and get high, maybe we’ll all get the answer that way! Don’t give up the ship!” exclaims Allen Ginsberg. Yes, the artist is getting high on the death of his civilization, breathing in its poisonous gases. And yes, our art definitely suffers from it. Our art is “confused” and all that jazz, jazz, jazz (Taylor Mead). But we refuse to continue the Big Lie of Culture. To the new artist the fate of man is more important than the fate of art, more important than the temporary confusions of art. You criticize our work from a purist, formalistic and classicist point of view. But we say to you: What’s the use of cinema if man’s soul goes rotten?

Jonas Mekas The Brig 1964, jonas mekas, the brig,

Stanley Brakhage

It seems to me that the entire society of man is bent on destroying that which is alive within its individuals (most contemporarily exemplified by the artist), so that presumably the society can run on and on like the machine it is, to the expense of the humans composing it. I have felt this both personally and in objectively watching the lives of others alive in their struggles, and most particularly in observing the death of the average human being insisted upon by the society at the time of that human being’s adolescence.

Stanley Brakhage

Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, nuevo cine americano, cine independiente americano,

Dick Preston

Artists, poets, filmmakers; it is you who are the last inheritors of the world’s conscience, the visionaries and prophets of the twentieth century. The voices of our “leaders” are as sound tracks in reverse. The parliaments and the churches of men preach dissension and confusion.

Thus, we can say, that the new independent cinema movement—like the other arts in America today—is primarily an existential movement, or, if you want, an ethical movement, a human act; it is only secondarily an aesthetic one. But then one could say that all art in all times has been, primarily, an existential act. Even when our films seem to be utterly detached from reality, like the works of Robert Breer or Brakhage—they come from a dissatisfaction with the static, outdated concepts of life and art. One could say that there is a morality in the new.

Robert Breer, Fist Fight, 1964

A Side Note on the Morality of the New

One may wonder, sometimes, why I am so obsessed with the new, why this hatred for the old.

I believe that true wisdom and knowledge are very old; but this wisdom and this knowledge have been covered with layers and layers of static culture.

If we know anything about man, it is this: he must be allowed to fulfill his own life, to live his life as fully as possible. The cul-de-sac of western culture is stifling the spiritual life of man. His «culture» is misleading his thoughts and his intuitions. My position is this: Everything that keeps man in the molds of western culture prevents him from living his own life. Surely, one of the functions of the artist is to listen to the true voice of man.

The new artist, by directing his ear inward, is beginning to catch bits of man’s true vision. By simply being new (which means, by listening deeper than their other contemporaries)—Brakhage and Breer contribute to the liberation of man’s spirit from the dead matter of culture, they open new vistas for life. In this sense, an old art is immoral—it keeps man’s spirit in bondage to Culture. The very destructiveness of the modern artist, his anarchy, as in Happenings, or even action painting, is, therefore, a positive act, a confirmation of life and freedom.

La maldad es aquello que es finito. / Evil is that which is finite.

Una Nota sobre la Improvisación
A Note on Improvisation

I have heard too often both American and foreign critics laugh at the words «spontaneity» and «improvisation.» They say this is not creation, that no art can be created «off-the-cuff.» Need I state here that such criticism is pure ignorance, that it represents only a snobbish, superficial understanding of the meaning of «improvisation»? The truth is that improvisation never excludes condensation, or selection. On the contrary, improvisation is the highest form of condensation, it points to the very essence of a thought, an emotion, a movement.

It was not without reason that Adam Mickiewicz called his famous Konrad Walenrod soliloquy an improvisation. Improvisation is, I repeat, the highest form of concentration, of awareness, of intuitive knowledge, when the imagination begins to dismiss the pre-arranged, the contrived mental structures, and goes directly to the depths of the matter. This is the true meaning of improvisation, and it is not a method at all, it is, rather, a state of being necessary for any inspired creation. It is an ability that every true artist develops by a constant and life-long inner vigilance, by the cultivation—yes!—of his senses.

Una Nota sobre la “Cámara Movida”
A Note on the “Shaky Camera”

Sunday 1961, Dan Drasin captures the Washington Square Park ‘Beatnik Riot’. —He lost the slickness but he gainded the truth, both in sound and in image.— Jonas Mekas on Dan Drasin.

No tienen remedio.

I am sick and tired of the guardians of Cinema Art who accuse the new filmmaker of shaky camera work and bad technique. In like manner, they accuse the modern composer, the modern sculptor, the modern painter of sloppiness and poor technique. I have pity for such critics. They are hopeless. I would rather spend my time in heralding the new. Mayakovski once said that there is an area in the human mind which can be reached only through poetry, and only through poetry which is awake, changing. One could also say that there is an area in the human mind (or heart) which can be reached only through cinema, through that cinema which is always awake, always changing. Only such cinema can reveal, describe, make us conscious, hint at what we really are or what we aren’t, or sing the true and changing beauty of the world around us. Only this kind of cinema contains the proper vocabulary and syntax to express the true and the beautiful. if we study the modern film poetry, we find that even the mistakes, the out-of-focus shots, the shaky shots, the unsure steps, the hesitant movements, the over-exposed, the under-exposed bits, have become part of the new cinema vocabulary, being part of the psychological and visual reality of modern man.

La Segunda Nota sobre la Improvisación
The Second Note on Improvisation

It was in his quest for inner freedom that the new artist came to improvisation. The young American filmmaker, like the young painter, musician, actor, resists his society. He knows that everything he has learned from his society about life and death is false. He cannot, therefore, arrive at any true creation, creation as revelation of truth, by re-working and re-hashing ideas, images and feelings that are dead and inflated—he has to descend much deeper, below all that clutter, he has to escape the centrifugal force of everything he has learned from his society. His spontaneity, his anarchy, even his passivity are his acts of freedom.

Sobre la Interpretación
On Acting

De izquierda a derecha / From left to right: Marlon Brando, James Dean y / and Ben Carruthers.

The fragile, searching acting style of the early Marlon Brando, a James Dean, a Ben Carruthers is only a reflection of their unconscious moral attitudes, their anxiety to be—and these are important words—honest, sincere, truthful. Film truth needs no words. There is more truth and real intelligence in their «mumbling» than in all the clearly pronounced words on Broadway in five seasons. Their incoherence is as expressive as one thousand words.

The young actor of today doesn’t trust any other will than his own, which, he knows, is still too frail and, thus, harmless—it is no will at all, only the distant, deep waves and motions and voices and groans of a Marlon Brando, a James Dean, a Ben Carruthers, waiting, listening (the same way Kerouac is listening for the new American word and syntax and rhythm in his improvisations; or Coltrane in his jazz; or De Kooning in his paintings). As long as the «lucidly minded» critics will stay out, with all their «form,” «content,» «art,» «structure,» «clarity,» «importance,”—everything will be all right, just keep them out. For the new soul is still a bud, still going through its most dangerous, most sensitive stage.

Palabras de Clausura
Closing Remarks

Several things should be clear by now.

The new American artist cannot be blamed for the fact that his art is in a mess he was born into that mess. He is doing everything to get out of that mess.

His rejection of «official» (Hollywood) cinema is not always based on artistic objections. It is not a question of films being bad or good artistically. It is a question of the appearance of a new attitude towards life, a new understanding of man.

Meshes of the afternoon 1943, por / by Maya Deren.

It is irrelevant to ask the young American artist to make films like those made in Russia or France or Italy; their needs are different, their anxieties are different. Content and form in art cannot be transplanted from country to country like beans.

To ask the American artist to make «positive» films, to clean out—at this time—all the anarchic elements from his work, means to ask him to accept the existing social, political and ethical order of today.

The films being made by the new American artist, that is, the independents, are by no means in the majority. But we must remember that it is always the few, the most sensitive ones who are the spokesmen of the true feelings, the truths of any generation.

And, finally, the films we are making are not the films we want to make forever, they are not our ideal of art: these are the films we must make if we don’t want to betray ourselves and our art, if we want to move forwards. These films represent only one specific period in the development of our lives and our work.

Wien & Mozart, 2001 por / by Jonas Mekas.

Wilhelm Reich

«Funcionalismo Orgonómico«

I can think of various arguments the critics or the readers of these notes may throw against me or against the young American artist of today as he is described here. Some may say that he is on a dangerous road, that he may never get out of his confusion in one piece; that he may succeed in destroying everything, that he will have nothing new to offer in its place, etc. etc.—the usual arguments that are thrown against anything young, budding, unknown.

I, however, look at the new man with trust. I believe in the truth (victory) of the new.

Our world is too cluttered with bombs, newspapers, TV antennae—there is no place for a subtle feeling or a subtle truth to rest its head. But the artists are working. And with every word, every image, every new musical sound, the confidence in the old is shaken, the entrance to the heart is widened.

Natural processes are uncertain, in spite of their lawfulness. Perfectionism and uncertainty are mutually exclusive.

Research without mistakes is impossible. All natural research is, and was, from its very beginning, explorative, «unlawful,» labile, externally reshaping, in flux, uncertain and unsure, yet still in contact with real natural processes. For these objective natural processes are in all their basic lawfulness variable to the highest degree, free in the sense of irregular, incalculable, and unrepeatable.
